Balancing clever humor with depth, the prolonged game Michael attempts with Death let's us consider the final moments in a tender manner. Having the opportunity to watch this production, it gives the audience moments of light laughter, serious contemplation, and love.

I really enjoyed the fun trick on never play chess with death. I think this can be portrayed in many different ways which allows for a ton of versatility!

This is a neat trick. A credible tale of meeting Death at the end of a difficult life which is affirming, warm, funny, even sweet. Sickles adds to the mythology of what is there with us at the very end and the effect is compelling.

A great twist on the "play chess with Death" theme. While there are lots of fun and funny moments in this play, it's the tenderness at the end that is the real surprise. What starts out as a comic premise turns into a gentle drama. What a lovely play.

While Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey will always hold a special place in my heart as far as Seventh Seal homages go, those looking for more cerebral fare that treats the subject of death with a touch of solemnity without drowning in its own gloom will be delighted by Scott Sickles' witty and comforting vision on what happens in the time between this world and whatever lies beyond.

A beautiful and haunting piece that addresses death in a human and accessible way. It was selected as part of our student-directed one-act play festival and was well received by the audience, and the cast and director had a blast working on it.

This play has an openness that allows the actors & production team to BYO specificity -- which seems about right for such a universal & yet unknowable experience. The audio version on the Gather by the Ghostlight podcast does it excellently, & really shows off how poignantly these words bring us through Michael's experience with death, even in the absence of the play's visual elements. & yet there's so much more to explore in different possible stagings or recordings.

Scott has masterfully written a beautiful moment of someone crossing over. While the personification of Death is often times written as a dark and menacing figure, Scott's version of Death is compassionate to its passenger. The dialogue floats in and out of playfulness and sadness and every word feels honest for the characters. Highly recommended!

Through an Ingmar Bergman-like chess game with Death, Sickles makes the idea of losing a chess game or one's life, something to accept and find peace in where there is love to embrace. Lovely.

The GATHER BY THE GHOST LIGHT podcast did a fabulous job at bringing to life this wonderful piece that offers emotions in spades! There are so many stereotypes of what death is but to see this unique and fabulous twist on that was intriguing as well as emotionally stimulating.
