  • David Katz: Last Drive to Dodge

I never expected that the world needed a play about a Black cowboy in post-Reconstruction Texas until I read this gorgeous work as an entry to Ashland New Plays Festival. Now I know it does! The characters of Ro and Prophet, and their relationship, are marvelously complex. It was lovely to see LDtD fully realized at Taproot Theatre with a great cast and design team. Hopefully more will get to see this at a theater near you.

I caught this at The Taproot Theatre and I can barely put into words how gorgeous it was. Complex characters, great roles for women and BIPOC actors, a fascinating world set during Reconstruction in Texas, lyrical prose, and when it delved into conflict, the characters never lost their three-dimensional humanity or vulnerability. And with a cast of four people and easy staging requirements, it is such a "doable" play. I hope many, many other theatres pick up this show!

A spectacular cowboy tale, refreshing in how it highlights stories the genre often overlooks. Through deals, deceit, and desire, the four characters push each other to a gripping climax.

This new play cracks open the world of the old West you need to experience. Taut and tender, Andrew Lee Creech's play manages to evoke a familiar Western style and infuse it with an entirely new and necessary sensibility. Highly recommend.
