Frequently Asked Questions: Opportunities

What happens when I upload a script?

+

When you upload a script, everyone else on the platform immediately has access to it. Your script will be included in search results for whatever criteria you set. In addition, some Readers and Organizations create saved searches, and if your script meets the criteria they set for those searches, they will receive an email with a link to your work.

Where do I go to find submission opportunities?

+

The short answer: you don’t, because they find you instead! When an Organization shares an opportunity that meets the criteria you’ve set for your script—everything from genre and length to cast size, subject matter, and demographics—you will get an email notifying you about the opportunity. The only catch is that you have to upload a full draft of your script to receive that notification.

How can I submit a script to a theater on the New Play Exchange?

+

Submissions are not part of the New Play Exchange. Instead, theaters post opportunities, and if you have a script that’s eligible for one of those opportunities, you will be notified via email. If you’d like to know whether a given theater accepts unsolicited submissions outside of the New Play Exchange, please contact the theater in question or visit the theater’s website.

I got an email about an opportunity, but now I can’t access it. Why?

+

Some opportunities are popular, and they close fast. Every eligible writer receives an email notification about an open opportunity at the same time, so it’s best to act quickly if you want your work to be considered.

What do I do if I have a question about an opportunity?

+

Ask the organization that shared it. On every opportunity you will find contact information, and you should reach out to the organization directly with any questions.

Why did I get notified about an opportunity that my script isn't right for?

+

Here's how the NPX opportunity system works:

  1. An organization fills out a form to create a draft opportunity. The form includes a description, a URL, and eligibility criteria, among other elements.
  2. The NPX team is notified that a new draft opportunity has been added to the system. We review them all, work with the organization to correct any errors, then publish the opportunity.
  3. The NPX system uses the selected eligibility criteria to identify all of the eligible scripts in our database, then emails the authors of those scripts to let them know about the opportunity.
  4. The authors of those scripts then evaluate the organization and the opportunity to determine whether their work really IS a fit.
  5. Authors who see a clear fit follow the appropriate steps to share their work with the organization. Sometimes that happens via the NPX tagging system, and sometimes the organization provides different instructions.

NOTE:

  • You will ONLY receive a notification about an opportunity if your script IS a match based on the eligibility criteria set by the organization.
  • The NPX match is based on the tags YOU assign to your script and the criteria set by the organization, but only YOU can determine if your script is a good fit
