Recommendations of ICONS

  • Ian Donley: ICONS

ICONS is a meticulously crafted play about legacy and what we sacrifice in order to leave a legacy behind. Clark's attention to detail is vivid, leaving anyone who chooses to produce this play a clear vision. The dialogue in this play goes from being crisp and sharp to vulnerable and smooth, sometimes in the same scene. This is one of those plays that needs to be seen on stage. The impact this had on me just reading it was palpable. I can only imagine the impact it would have on stage.

  • Playwrights Foundation: ICONS

The community of Playwrights Foundation Bay Area literary council readers advanced ICONS as a finalist for the 47th Bay Area Playwrights Festival.

This script is a daring exploration of vibrant black, queer elders. This script is highly nuanced and deftly swerves through dramatic shifts in style and form.

We hope this play is considered for further development and investigation, and finds dedicated collaborators in its journey towards production.

  • Lizz Mangan: ICONS

Poetic, introspective, ICONIC! Clark's grasp of language is breathtaking, and the disassembly of what makes an icon explores self love and self doubt, with the curiosity of what our legacy leaves behind. Gorgeous.

  • Franky D. Gonzalez: ICONS

What makes an icon? What cements a legacy? What is the past? What is destiny? What is the place of love for someone with ambition? What does it mean to long for a shining city in the distance? Xavier Clark's ICONS brims with these questions as an interview between an Icon and a Pulitzer winner becomes a fantastic exploration of the cosmos and the ultimate power of Queer Black Love's potential to change the world.

  • Shaun Leisher: ICONS

"You can’t put a price tag on a person’s life."

An excellent play about legacy and art. A piece of work that is full of surprises and goes to some wonderfully bizarre places. This play has some killer monologues for Black actors.

  • Mak Shealy: ICONS

ICONS is a poetic revelation of a play. An argument for rest, for resilience and for peace in the pursuit of "excellence." The lyricism of Clark's writing shines in every syllable. I saw this read aloud to a sold out crowd and there wasn't a dry eye in the room. I can't recommend this play highly enough!
