  • Playwrights Foundation: This Is Not a Noh Play

The community of National Committee readers for the 47th Bay Area Playwrights Festival advanced This is Not a Noh Play as a Semi-Finalist at Playwrights Foundation. We specifically leaned into the ghost; which the playwright uses as a powerful connective medium across time, personal history, and culture. We hope this play is considered for further development and investigation, and finds dedicated collaborators in this play’s journey towards production.

Loved reading this play, especially seeing how Nina navigates all of her different relationships and feelings throughout it!

  • Matthew Linder: This Is Not a Noh Play

This play has so many small things working for it that make it into something great and wonderful. The conversational tone is masterfully done and the humor is well-placed to give it just a little extra life (haha).

But what really drives this play is the relationships, which are so thoroughly explained, explored, and shown but never in your face. After an hour and a half of reading it, I reached the end, and I felt a gut punch that made me truly appreciate how this play was written.

Amazing work. I hope you keep writing!

  • A. René Gutierrez: This Is Not a Noh Play

This play was a piercingly poignant look at how death, depression, and suicide affect those who have to deal with the aftermath, while also portraying some of the darker sides of an old and rich culture. I will be returning to this play.

  • Morey Norkin: This Is Not a Noh Play

A beautiful, humorous, and touching story of loss, love, deep friendship beyond the grave, modern Japanese culture, teaching English in Japan, Trivial Pursuit, and Star Trek Monopoly! Sounds like a lot, but it is all woven together wonderfully by Miz Hashimoto. With characters and relationships that draw you in instantly, THIS IS NOT A NOH PLAY would make for a great evening of theater.

  • Sam Mueller: This Is Not a Noh Play

This play expertly holds so many things at one time. Miz Hashimoto creates complex and complete characters, all living at the intersection of many different identities. Deeply funny and full of joy, this piece also moves through personal and communal grief in a way that feels both unique and tangible. Every time I have the honor of revisiting this play, I find new layers to both characters within the play and also my own personhood. I look forward to the day I can see a fully-realized production.
