Three people on a Buddhist retreat are trapped together after the wall of a cave collapses and have to figure out how to sustain themselves and each other in the dark. Luminescence is about being present to each other in whatever ways we know how, fixing what we can, caring for the people around us and being brave in the face of everything else.

    Premiere Stages, the professional Equity theatre in residence at Kean University, is pleased to recognize “Luminescence” by Emily Welty as a Semi-Finalist for the 2023 Premiere Play Festival. “Luminescence” rose through a competitive selection process conducted by Premiere staff and a panel of outside theatre professionals to become one of 40 Semi-Finalists out of 701 submissions. The panel was particularly impressed by the engaging, high-stakes conflict that the characters must navigate, as well as the dark comedy at work in the piece. Our congratulations and thanks to Emily.
