We are please to support this play and playwright! This play was a featured staged reading in our 2022 New Works Festival at Kitchen Dog Theater in Dallas, Texas.

A beautiful piece that centers around two human, lived-in characters and a touching, organically evolving relationship. I loved the combination of authentic humanity with lyrical language and moments of fantastical/theatrical visual storytelling. At the center of the piece is an exploration of the negative impacts of machismo/toxic masculinity, of how people struggle to avoid it, and of how it is passed down through generations. The historical context is also wonderfully threaded throughout, and I loved how richly built the world was with so few characters. Who we saw and who we didn't see were equally important.

As a National Committee Reader for the Bay Area Playwrights Festival, I was introduced to this play and the love between the characters of Monterey and Maximilian. Set in the early 70s, the play is structured like a book, with each scene containing poetic dialogue, giving room for the performers to explore the nuances of this powerful relationship. It's also clear how the intimacy of the play will invite audiences into this story. The play takes us on a heartfelt journey of our first loves.
