InterAct Theatre Company

About the Organization

InterAct is a theatre for today's world, dedicated to commissioning, developing and producing new and contemporary plays that explore the social, political and cultural issues of our time. We are drawn to plays that offer surprising, controversial, lesser known and/or competing points of view on the full range of socio-political issues facing humanity.

We are drawn to plays that offer surprising, controversial, lesser known and/or competing points of view on the full range of socio-political issues facing humanity.

Despite sometimes being perceived as a “lefty” or “social justice” theatre, InterAct is not interested in rehearsing liberal talking points. For example, a play that merely says “racism is bad” is not for us. Everyone in our organization, all of our artists, and everyone in our audience already agrees that racism is bad! We would, however, be interested in plays that offer situations or conflicts in which issues of race are more complicated than they seem, or plays that examine some less-explored or commonly misunderstood ways that race plays a critical role in the lives of actual people.

Finally, within our mission and aesthetic, we are always particularly eager to read comedies, plays with small casts, and plays that center global themes and non-American stories and characters.

  • This play could not be more prophetic, while also being a wonderfully rich, dynamic and moving story. We produced the first production, as part of an NNPN Rolling World Premiere in March/April 2024, and it ended up being our best-selling show ever. Set against a truly unimaginable, and yet somehow very real America in the not to distant future, the play is filled with heart, humor and a little bit of magic.

  • RIFT is exceptionally deep, timely, intellectually and emotionally engaging. We produced the second production, as part of an NNPN Rolling World Premiere, and we had our two actors switch roles every other performance, as the play intends. It was one of the most rewarding and successful shows in our history, garnering tremendous audience response. Over 80 patrons returned to see the show a second time with the actors in opposite roles.

  • Years after reading this play, it has stuck with me for many reasons. First, it depicts characters and circumstances we rarely, if ever, see on stage. Second, it offers a dynamic blend of the personal and political, as the characters grapple with war-related trauma and shame, while navigating the challenges of finding (and holding onto) deep human connections. And third, the world of the play is both intensely intimate and wonderfully theatrical. A truly gripping piece of theatre.
