An elite high school softball player with a tumultuous home life pursues an athletic scholarship by learning the only premium position her plus-size body allows: catcher. She enlists the local altar boy to coach her, and though both of them are conspicuously queer, a complex and ecstatic relationship blossoms between them, and they find themselves dealing with complications much more serious than sports. Honest, raw, and darkly funny, Two Catchers is a Gen Z coming-of-age romance about gender, meritocracy, love, God, and baseball.

A queer story of love and friendship for the younger generation that will kill you with laughter, drag you back to life with hope, and kill you again with the crushing reality of life’s hardships. This three-hander invites conversation about fat-shaming, bi erasure, sexual exploration, and the mental pressure put on child caretakers. Goren-Wilson doesn’t hold back on the difficult topics, but likewise, he doesn’t skimp on the humor. I can’t wait to see his work shine on many more stages.

Calling it now: TWO CATCHERS is gonna be a huge deal. This play has everything going for it—a truly original coming of age story, relevance both topical and timeless—-but its greatest strength is the tender, complicated teen romance at its heart. Phoebe and Connor’s connection is inexplicable, erotic, subversive, and rooted in seeing and being seen. Goren-Wilson writes queerness in a way that feels revelatory; in TC, identity is expansive and indefinable, an exploration rather than a label.
