The Caldera

Best friends Lizzie and Maggie hit the open road in search of health care aka an abortion. Up
in the New Mexico mountains, between the fabled country of California and the restrictive
lands of Texas, they find themselves. A play about choice, freedom, and addictive tv
shows.

3 really clear and specific characters with a lot of gorgeous dialogue in a play that really takes off into another dimension and yet is grounded in a dark reality. Beautiful work. Relevant and necessary for right now.

What an unapologetic play, with tension & heart layered on more with every shift. This play is also full of stunning lines that floored me with their poetic introspection. This play mostly takes place in a car, but the world (unfortunately not far off from our current one) that Saltwick has created for these mindful, playful, & determined characters stretches far beyond those doors & windows. Maggie & Lizzie really aren't asking for much: simply love & care. They could be any of us.

Sarah Saltwick's beautiful play The Caldera is timely and infinitely produceable. Navigating questions about abortion, autonomy, friendship and love the play never feels heavy-handed or simplistic. These are complex characters navigating complex questions with humor and courage. Sarah's slow-burn into theatrical magic lets the play stay grounded in reality while reaching into the mythic.
