The Madonna of Logan Square

Virginia always wanted a baby, but is surprised when she turns up pregnant. Mostly because she's a trans woman, and that should be impossible. Right? But as the world continues to change, the connections between science and magic start to fray, and maybe Virginia is just the first in a new kind of woman, a new kind of human.

The community of National Committee readers for the 46th Bay Area Playwrights Festival advanced THE MADONNA OF LOGAN SQUARE as a Semi-Finalist at Playwrights Foundation. We were highly engaged by the spiritual world of the Three Aspects, as well as the warm moments between characters. We were compelled by the pressure to be a spokeswoman for the trans community and feeling alone in the future, as well as enjoyed the dialogue that expresses moments of queer joy. We hope this play is considered for further development and investigation, and finds dedicated collaborators in this play’s journey...

  • Jude Cramer: The Madonna of Logan Square

This play expertly blends realism and myth like I feel great art about queerness should! It’s funny, tear-jerking, thought-provoking, all the things you want from theater — I highly recommend.

  • Brendan Bourque-Sheil: The Madonna of Logan Square

Sweet, dynamic, wonderfully thought-provoking, and highly theatrical, this play fuses history, myth, and current events to zoom out on trans identities and consider their place in the grander scheme of human evolution. It's an ambitious goal, but this script absolutely sticks the landing, and manages to articulate something profound and vital, with joyful exuberance.

Cast of roughly 5 actors should play all parts!

VIRGINIA-- 33. Trans woman (she/her).
STEPHANIE-- 28. Non-binary trans woman (she/they). Virginia's bff and roomie.
SAM-- 35. Cis Man (he/him). Virginia's new boyfriend? They're not using those words yet. A real sweetie, though.
DR. BUTLER-- 50s. Cis Woman (she/her). Virginia's OBGYN. MARY-- 63. Cis Woman (she/her). Virginia's mom. DAPHNE-- 50s-60s. Cis Woman (she/her). Sam's Mom.
THREE ASPECTS OF THE DIVINE FEMININE-- Any age. Beyond gender (many pronouns, but not cis, and not always traditionally feminine). In any production, any one of them may be played by a white person, but no more than one. They are, and represent, three sides of the Divine Feminine, as follows:
NATURE-- Grounded in nature and life. Maybe covered in leaves or is buglike in some way. Someone with connection to the air, to the water, and the soil. They/them pronouns. Played by a trans actor of any gender.
THE BODY--Grounded in the body, not just sexually, but someone who knows and has control of the body innately. A dancer, a gymnast, a martial artist? She/her pronouns. Played by a trans feminine actor.
CREATION-- Grounded in the creation of all things. (NOT just childbirth) Maybe a nerd, or an artist stained with paint or ink, someone who is always on the phone. This script will use ey/em/eirs pronouns, but any neopronouns are acceptable, and up to the discretion of the production. Played by a trans feminine actor.
A NURSE-- Cis, any age.
DAUGHTER-- played by the actor who plays Creation. An image of the future daughter of Virginia.
VARIOUS VOICES, both recorded and performed live.
