A two-act undertaking of the Salvadoran Civil War, MADRES DE LA REVOLUCIÓN so unflinchingly sends spiraling the clockwise counter to most reverently illuminate these revolutionary graces. Representing their narrative is an imagined woman’s journey from new mother to revolutionary commander, and suddenly, to resilient captive. Personal choices constitute the vantage point of the war, as Mélida relives her transformative progression as her escape from the asphyxiating bars: moments of great romance and motherhood, friendship—from their agleam arrays of immortal-like laughter to their exchanges quite melodious, deep—the phantom of an everyday life. Redefining the concept, days of imprisonment count by in stark otherness, stitching an ordeal so magnetized by its malevolent contrast. In both realities, Mélida confronts the pressures of war as these dark omnipresences plague worse and worse her sacred relationships. As a story projecting imagined characters who are true to the spirit of the historical participants, “Madres” is a tribute to these revolutionary mothers and to all the untold revolutionaries who fought for freedom.

  • Playwrights Foundation: MADRES DE LA REVOLUCIÓN

Playwrights Foundation congratulates MADRES DE LA REVOLUCION as a Finalist for BAPF 2020. This play rose to the top 35 out of 735 plays submitted, and was discussed at length by our Bay Area Literary Council for consideration in our season. We loved how this play uses the language of theater to illuminate challenging perspectives and compelling intersectional questions. This play ultimately moved & inspired us and spoke to the core mission of PF. We hope that once we’re allowed to return to our theaters again, it will be considered for production to reach new audiences.
