The Islanders

by Carey Crim

Anna lives a small life on an underpopulated island in the Great Lakes. She has few friends and likes it that way. Her quiet, controlled world is turned upside don by the arrival of charming but secretive new neighbor Dutch. For different reasons Dutch and Anna have each been thrown away by mainstream society. Can their connection survive the revelations that must inevitably come with true intimacy?

Crim is so clever in her utilization of dialogue that she's able to establish everything without ever seeming expository: setting, time, circumstances, conflict. She has the story progress through action on the part of the characters: this is talent. She's not afraid to let her characters seem foolish, another rarity. Many will make much of the ideas revolving around newfound intimacy for those well into middle-age, but plenty is due to the elegance of Crim's writing, technically and artistically. Crim makes a note about a third character, also successful with its fauna, flora, et al. A comic...

The Islanders was one of five finalists that received readings during our annual New Year/New Plays Festival in January of 2023. It is a beautiful, funny, and ultimately moving piece about loneliness, resolve, and the vulnerability required for human connection. It's also a rare play about finding that connection after "a certain age" which makes it warm, wonderful, and all too urgent.

A moving look at connection and mental health as two people find each other, having their worlds changed by this newfound intimacy. Well done.
